Video Remote Interpreting Service at SIUC (Fee for Service)
Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) is a process that places sign language interpreters in your classrooms, guest lectures, or meetings via a high-speed internet video connection. Interpreters work from the SIUC campus and can be broadcast virtually anywhere in the nation. Schools, colleges, or universities anywhere can use this service to meet the demand for interpreters.
Using our video remote interpreters means you'll have access to highly qualified and credentialed interpreters with the support of one of the nation’s most experienced VRI providers. SIUC was one of the first to provide VRI and our staff has a wealth of knowledge and experience, ensuring your students have the best service possible.

Getting Started
Start the process the minute you know you need an interpreter. Contact your Information Technology Department, Instructional Support or Video Conferencing Department and explain what you want to do with this technology. Ask for their help in identifying tech support personnel who can assist you in testing the connection.
Getting Support
SIUC offers free tech support and all test calls are free of charge. Your own tech professional must provide a reasonable amount of ongoing support as well. Your institution must have tech support staff available to help, proper bandwidth dedicated to the calls, and an IT department willing to open firewalls for streaming video. With proper tech support from your institution, your student has a good connection to our interpreter and has full access to the lecture.

Equipment
We can provide services using either traditional videoconferencing equipment or your student may connect via a laptop. A webcam is needed with the laptop and it is routinely necessary for the speaker to use wireless or USB microphone.
Using a laptop and logging on to our Polycom CMA server is an easy process, similar to online meeting platforms that are already familiar to many students. We will step your tech support through the log in process first and schedule a training session with you and/or your student. Once your student learns how to log in using a password and is shown the features of the Polycom CMA desktop, we are ready to begin interpreting. With the power of our Polycom CMA server, there’s no need to purchase additional software.
